Phone Privacy Settings That Actually Matter

Most privacy checklists are noise. These are the handful of settings that measurably reduce how much data leaves your phone.

Privacy guides tend to list every toggle in the settings app. Most of them change very little. A short list does most of the work.

Start with identifiers

Advertising identifiers are the connective tissue of cross-app tracking. Turning them off breaks the simplest form of profile building.

Then location

  • Set location access to "while using" for everything that is not a maps app.
  • Disable precise location for social and shopping apps.

Background refresh and microphone access

Background activity is where quiet data collection happens. Audit it once, then revisit twice a year.

A realistic goal

You are not trying to disappear. You are trying to reduce the number of parties who hold a continuous record of your movements and habits.
